The STA Disability Swim Teacher Qualification is a specialist qualification designed to help you expand your swim teaching career while making a meaningful difference through inclusive aquatic education.

This award builds on your existing teaching knowledge and develops the vocational skills, confidence, and technical understanding needed to plan and deliver safe, structured, and inclusive swimming lessons for learners with disabilities and additional needs.

Courses are delivered in flexible formats that include online zoom theory session and in person practical. Private training can also be arranged at your facility. Once qualified, you will be able to teach inclusive swimming lessons tailored to a wide range of abilities, helping you broaden your class offerings, support diverse communities, and provide meaningful aquatic opportunities for all swimmers.

When You Get This Qualification?

  • You will be able to gain employment as a disability swimming teacher who can teach specialist disability swimming lessons as well as expand your inclusive learn to swim swimming lesson provision
  • You will be qualified to teach the Rockhopper and Emperor series of STA’s progressive International Learn to Swim Programme – specific disability awards that focus on skills and distance
  • Your course resource manual will act as a guide throughout your disability swimming teaching journey – always there for you to refer to should you need it
  • Keep your knowledge and skills up-to-date with regular CPDs.

How To Take Your Teaching Career Further

If you enjoy teaching participants with disabilities to swim, then you may consider a career that involves working with them in other environments. There are many specialist schools or care facilities that may have opportunities for assistants or voluntary groups that want enthusiastic and caring people to help them improve the quality of life for so many people.

Disability swimming teachers may also wish to take on a mentoring role within the workplace, become responsible for coordinating or managing inclusion within the learn to swim programme or share their knowledge and experience with the next generation of swimming teachers by becoming an aquatic tutor.

You’ll need to make sure you’ve met the following requirements before you attend your course:

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Hold the STA Swimming Teacher Qualification or acceptable equivalent (please note the Swim Ireland Level 1 Swim Teacher is not an acceptable pre-requisite, you would need level 2).

Learners must have all pre-requisites in place before the start of the course. Qualification certificates cannot be issued if all pre-requisites are not met before the start of the course, post course submissions will not be accepted.

What is the mermaid and monofin swim teacher qualifcation?

It is a specialist aquatic teaching qualification that trains qualified swim teachers to safely deliver mermaid and monofin swimming sessions, including structured lessons and taster experiences.

Is this qualification recognised?

Yes. It is created by STA aquatic experts in partnership with MermaidsUK, regulated by Ofqual, endorsed by CIMSPA, and recognised internationally.

Who is this course intended for?

It is intended for qualified swimming teachers who want to expand their teaching portfolio and offer mermaid and monofin sessions as part of their programme or anyone with an interest in upskilling.

What will I be able to do after qualifying?

You will be able to deliver mermaid and monofin swimming sessions, including one-off taster sessions and the full awards series covering beginner through to advanced skills.
